The Thief In Oslo, Norway

The Thief Hotel Oslo Norway

I had to find The Thief quickly, I was running out of time. It was arranged for me to be at the meeting point for the walking tour in under an hour and had to find it before going there. I walked down quiet, narrow streets and passed through wide-open squares looking for it. I walked around train tracks and over bridges.  Just as I passed by a tall grey building, I saw The Thief on the other side of the canal. Tall, dark brown, with a splash of color on the right side. The Thief Hotel Oslo is deemed to be the most luxurious hotel in Norway. It is also on the 2018 & 2019 Condé Nast Traveller Gold List. It is the only one to make the list out of all the Norway hotels.

The Thief Hotel Oslo

The Thief Hotel Room View

Some may think calling this Olso hotel ‘The Thief’ may seem strange. However, when you know the history of the area, the name makes sense. During the 18th – century the area was known as Tjuvholmen, Thief Islet, was filled with thieves, pirates, prostitutes, and was the hub for criminal activity. Not far from the hotel is the area where executions took place.

The Thief Hotel Fjord View

The capital city of Norway, Oslo is at the head of the Oslofjord on the country’s southern coast. Oslo is known for its museums, green spaces, and is host to countless events and festivals throughout the year.

The Bygdøy Peninsula, located on the west side of the city center is home to many of Oslo’s museums including the Viking Ship Museum (get your tickets here), The Kon-Tiki Museum, Fram Museum – The Polar Ship Fram, Norwegian Maritime Museum, and the Holocaust Center.

In addition to these museums, the mainly residential area contains a popular recreational area. Locals soak up the sun and fresh air enjoying the beach, including the volleyball court and restaurant at Huk. Additionally, numerous walking and biking trails will bring through lush woods, past historic buildings, and offer views of the royal cows and the sea at Paradisbukta beach.

The ski-jumping hill, Holmenkollbakken, has been host to various World Cups and World Ski Champion competitions. It has hosted the Holmenkollen Ski Festival since 1892. The ski museum, which sits under the ski-jump, showcases over 4000 years of skiing history and is the oldest of its kind in the world. The hill offers panoramic views of Oslo and the Fjord.

With only 118 rooms, it would be considered a Boutique hotel in Oslo. It encompasses nine different room categories, creating a room to suit the most selective traveler. The colors of black and gold throughout the hotel have taken traditional Scandinavian design to new extravagant levels. Rooms range from 24 m² (258 sf²) to 94 m² (1011 ft²) for the Oslo Suite with a private rooftop terrace. The bathrooms contain a rain shower, and some have a bathtub with a separate shower. Toiletries are provided. However, they are the individual size which is environmentally unfriendly as it is a large contributor to the plastic waste in the world.
