Ruprit, Besalú, and Girona – A day trip through part of Catalonia, Spain
Spain has so many beautiful places to see. It makes it hard to just pick an area to visit as I want to see everywhere (inside and outside of Spain). I spent the day visiting three different towns in the Catalonia area in northeast Spain. The Costa Brava area with its stunning beaches and the Pyrenees Mountains are also found in this area. A few weeks ago I was in the Costa Brava area of Palafrugell for the La Garoinada CelebrationWhile I was there I stayed one night at the Hotel Llevant, with stunning views of the sea. The boat tour on the Jolie Biche was a great way to spend the afternoon eating fresh sea urchins. Dinner at Restaurant La Xicra, in Palafrugell, was amazing. On one other previous trip, I stayed in Hotel Palau Lo Mirador, an old palace dating back to the beginning of the 9th – century.

This day trip from Barcelona was not for any articles or reviews, and I did not bring my camera with me. I went solely for the purpose of relaxing and enjoying the day without thinking about work. It was so beautiful that I couldn’t visit there and not write anything about it. The photo’s here were taken with my phone and I will be going back to spend more time there and write more about the areas, history, and things to do. For now, here is a little information and pictures of the three towns I was in.

Ruprit

Under 100 Km from Barcelona, Ruprit is great for anyone wanting to get out of the city for the day. The church of Sant Joan de Fàbregues dates back to 968 and is about 3 Km from the castle. Sitting on a narrow ridge above the river, the old town is completely made of natural rock streets and stone houses.

Country Views

After leaving Ruprit we took a small detour to see some amazing views of the countryside. On a clear day, you can see the ocean in the distance.

Besalú

Besalú is a town I will return to and write a lot more about. It is a beautiful town with a lot of history. The 12th – century Romanesque bridge is absolutely stunning. The town has rock and stone arcaded streets and many squares. A Jewish bath (Mikveh) dating from the 11th or 12th – century can be found in the town. If you only have half a day, I would recommend going to Besalú as your day trip from Barcelona.

Girona

Girona city is the capital city of the province of Girona, founded in 79 BC. Throughout history, the city has been captured 7 times and undergone 25 sieges. The beautiful city is full of natural rock streets, hills, and stairs. The walkable old walls and lookout towers offer beautiful views of Girona and the surrounding area. It was dark by the time I arrived in Girona so I didn’t get any pictures of the views. There are several trains that go to Girona from Barcelona, so I will take the 40-minute journey and return to spend more time in this beautiful city. If you go in May, you can see the annual flower festival.
