Enjoy Winter, The Stunning Lake Como, Italy

Lake Como, Italy

The wind hollowed through the shutters as streaks of light started to peak through the cracks of rollers. The sun had risen.

Lying in the comfortable bed at the Hotel Metropole Suisse, I was hoping it was going to be a beautiful day and the wind was not as bad as it sounded.

The day prior, I opened the window rollers of the lake view room, and all I saw was cloud and rain.

This was not the weather I wanted to have while visiting Lake Como, Italy. However, it was the end of November and I was grateful to visit one of the most well-known Italian lakes.

The second day had brought sunshine as the high winds blew the cloud and rain away from the previous day, which brought more favorable Lake Como Weather, but it was still cold.

The Town of Como

Como, along with all the other towns around Lake Como in Italy has become a popular tourist destination. Within the city of Como, there are numerous things to see and do inside and outside.

Several works of art, parks, boat trips, ferry rides, palaces, theaters, museums, gardens, and churches to visit.

Some of the most popular are the Duomo, the Villa Olmo, the Broletto, and the funicular to Brunate. The funicular climbs 2,346 ft. (715 m) above sea level to connect Como to the small village of Brunate.

Many historical figures were born in Como including scientist Alessandro Volta. He is credited with the discovery of methane and the inventor of the electrical battery. Volta’s life and legacy are celebrated and symbolized throughout Como.

The Tempio Voltiano is a memorial by the lake in the gardens. Villa Olmo is home to the Voltian Foundation. On the 1990-1997 Italian 10,000 lira note, his image and sketch of his voltaic pile are portrayed.

Around Lago di Como

The bright blue sky and snow-capped mountains were the perfect backdrops to the exquisite 18th – century communities sprinkled around the lake and tucked into the mountainsides.

The views along the drive on the narrow, curvy road from the City of Como to Cadenabbia was astonishing. Perhaps a little bit more magnificent is the unobstructed views from the ferry across the lake to the town of Bellagio.

In Bellagio, the first identifiable inhabitants are from 400BC. However, there are signs of a human presence from about 30,000 years ago in the Paleolithic Period. After our light lunch and wine tasting at the incredible Cava Turacciolo Enoteca – wine bar, we walked through the town.

Everything At Your Fingertips
