Rotorua, New Zealand

Rotorua is New Zealand’s cultural capital and is a great place to base yourself in the North Island.  Not only are there incredible Maori cultural activities, but it is also an adventure hub for adrenaline seekers and nature lovers.

Rotorua is most famous for its cultural activities.  It is the best place in the country to experience Maori culture, learn about their traditions and taste a traditional Maori hangi.  Much of New Zealand culture is underpinned by Maori values and customs, so experiencing a cultural dinner and show will help you to see New Zealand in a different way.

Rotorua is distinctly different from other parts of New Zealand as it is a geothermal hotspot.  All over the city, you will see steam and water bubbling in the streams, or rising above the drain grates on the road.  There are many spots you can visit for free, such as Kerosene Creek where you can bathe in a hot waterfall. Or explore a geothermal tourist attraction such as Wai-o-tapu where the water changes to incredible colors or Hells Gate to bathe in a mud bath.

The final reason you want Rotorua on your must-do list is the range of adventure activities that are abundant here.  Kiwis have been coming up with ingenious inventions for years and you can test out the Zorb, invented here in Rotorua, where you can roll down a hill in a big inflatable ball.  Or for an adrenaline buzz, you could white water raft down the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world.

Avoiding the Crowds in Bangkok, Thailand

Written by Sally Flint from Book and Family Chat. Follow Sally on Twitter.

Bangkok is hot year-round, but visiting in springtime avoids the September and October rains.  It is a wonderful time to indulge in some shopping therapy in one of the many shopping malls.

As one of the most visited cities in the world, Bangkok can become very busy. Over the Christmas and New Year period it becomes very crowded with long queues to enter the key tourist attractions such as the Grand Palace and Temple at Dawn. Visiting during late March or April means that accommodation will be cheaper, queues shorter and crowded streets fewer.

Shopping in Bangkok is easier than shopping in many countries. Numerous shopping malls are containing all popular and designer stores. All of these shops are air-conditioned, include lots of eateries and cafes and most are easily accessible from the cheap and easy Sky train.

If you become tired of the luxury of high-end and easy shopping then there are plenty of markets too brimming with cheap clothing and all kinds of souvenirs. The famous Chatuchak weekend market deserves its excellent reputation and is a wonderful place to spend a Saturday or Sunday morning. Don’t go too early as many stallholders won’t arrive until about 10.00 a.m.

If your visit coincides with Songkran you will be able to participate, observe and enjoy this wonderful Buddhist festival. Songkran is known as the water festival and uses water to wash away the negativity from the previous year. Practically speaking this reveals itself in pouring water on people’s backs from buckets, or in recent years, water pistols of all shapes and sizes. The most famous festival takes place in an area called Silom that extends over 4 kilometers. It is a huge street party with vendors selling wonderful Thai snacks and dishes that visitors can try and enjoy. It is a lot of fun to buy and the water keeps you cool.

There is something for everyone in this great city. Why not relax during the evening by traveling by boat along the Chao Phraya River to Asiatique. This relatively new project combines, shopping eating, and sightseeing all under one roof.

Jordan

We can’t talk about the best spring holiday destinations without mentioning Jordan. While many people may be concerned about traveling to the Middle East, Jordan is actually a very safe country. It’s also one of the most spectacular countries I’ve ever been to. Jordan is like a movie set, and, in fact, dozens of movies from Indiana Jones to The Martian and Star Wars were filmed in this breathtaking country. From mindblowing desert landscapes to fascinating UNESCO World Heritage sites, Jordan has an enormous amount of things to see.

Of course, Jordan is most famous for the archaeological city of Petra. As one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. But make sure you don’t stop at its most popular building, the Treasury. There is so much to discover in Petra, and there’s a good reason three-day tickets are available.

And when you travel to Jordan don’t forget to plan an overnight stay in its most famous desert valley, Wadi Rum. Exploring the valley on a desert jeep tour and spending the night in a bedouin camp was the most memorable part of my trip to Jordan. Petra and Wadi Rum are not far from each other, so you can combine the two on a trip that could last two to four days in total.

Spring is a great time to visit Jordan because it’s not yet extremely hot during the day, but not too cold at night anymore either. So if you’re looking for one of the best spring holiday destinations you should travel to Jordan.

You should check out this waterfront beach house in Alegria in the Philippines.

Bali, Indonesia

Written by Mal Hellyer from Raw Mal Roams. Follow Mal on Instagram here.

Bali is a perfect spring break destination for many reasons. Bali’s rainy season ends in March and from April to June you can enjoy blue skies and clear water perfect for water sports or just chilling on the beach but also it is a less busy time before the high season that starts in June.

Bali is such a diverse island! Head to the south for some breath-taking, unspoiled Uluwatu beaches. Bali caters to all tastes from hipster spots where surfers hang out to world-class luxury clifftop villas and chic beach clubs.

And there is so much more to explore on the island than its stunning beaches. Balinese people are proud of their local culture and heritage. They celebrate many religious events including the Yellow Festival and boast many staggering Hindu temples across the island including Tanah Lot, Ulun Danu Beratan, and Pura Lempuyang Temple with the Instagram famous spot of Gates of Heaven.

Head to Ubud and stay in one of the luxurious private pool villas overlooking the rice field for total relaxation. Try some mouth-watering vegetarian cuisine and let the power of hands work magic on your body with one of the traditional Balinese massages.

If you’re more of an active person, visit Ubud’s rice fields, go on a nature walk through the scenic Campuhan Ridge, or for an ultimate adventure take a sunrise hike to Mount Batur, which is an active volcano!

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Written by Iuliya from Doing Life with Iuliya. Follow Iuliya on Instagram here.

If you’re seeking warmth, food, and adventure, then there is no better place than the tropical paradise that is Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur is the capital city of Malaysia and it firstly has all the trappings of a modern cosmopolitan city: the high-rise buildings, international brands, and great ease of transport.

Then there is the other side that is more unique to Kuala Lumpur, starting with food. You will be hard-pressed to find any Malaysian that doesn’t love food, whether it is along the streets (Jalan Alor is popular), in malls (where most Malaysians are found due to the humidity outside – Pavillion Bukit Bintang, Mid Valley, and The Gardens are very popular) or even underground food courts like Hutong in Lot 10. If you’re adventurous, try the durian. It is a favorite and we locals even have durian buffets for dinner! It’s a glorious affair.

Alternatively, there is the most adventurous side of things. If you take a day trip out, you can go for a 4-hour spelunking adventure in Gua Tempurung (one of my most favorite activities and one I have written about in my blog). You can also go white-water rafting, although I would recommend going during the monsoon so that the water level is higher!

And finally, jungle trekking. If you’re seeking a challenge, then the 12-hour epic hike at Gunung Nuang is a must and is a mere 1 hours’ drive from KL. Alternatively, if you fancy staying in the city, there is the KL Forest Eco Park (formerly known as Bukit Nanas). It is the only real rainforest reserve located in the HEART of Kuala Lumpur and even has an Instagram-famous forest canopy for children and adventurous hikers alike to pose on!

Sydney, Australia

Written by Ingrid Norris from Fabulous and Fun Life. Follow Ingrid on Instagram here.

Springtime in Canada is Autumn in Australia which is one of the best times to travel to Sydney. Sydney’s Autumn weather is perfect for sightseeing in comfort without the scorching heat of Summer.

Sydney is a spectacular city located on magnificent Sydney Harbour. I always suggest visiting Circular Quay as the starting point of your Sydney visit. From here you can easily access some of Sydney’s best-recognized landmarks, the structurally stunning Sydney Opera House, and the world-renowned Sydney Harbour Bridge.

If you have the budget for it, I highly recommend climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge for the best bird’s eye view of the city and harbor. If you are short of funds or time then visiting the Pylon Lookout or walking along the bridge are other scenic options.

Also within a short walking distance from Circular Quay is the beautiful Botanic Gardens and the historic Rocks area. There are numerous Australian pubs and eateries in the cobblestone Rocks area and every weekend the Rocks are host to an open-air market where you are sure to find a unique Australian souvenir to take home.

Sydney’s beaches are less crowded in Autumn and well worth a visit. Catching a ferry from Circular Quay to Manly to participate in a learn-to-surf lesson on iconic Manly Beach is an activity you won’t forget in a hurry. Wetsuits are supplied if required. Bondi Beach in Sydney’s east is another popular beach for tourists. If you are a fan of the TV series Home and Away then a drive up north to Palm Beach which is Summer Bay in the TV series is recommended. You’ll be able to see numerous props from the show at the beach and if you are lucky you may even see some filming of the show.

Sydney’s Taronga Zoo is another short ferry trip from Circular Quay. Australia’s native wildlife is unique and Taronga Zoo is the best place to see kangaroos, wallabies, emus, and koalas up close. Sydney’s Autumn is the best season to walk around the zoo and the animals are usually more active in Autumn than during the hot Summer months.

So if you are looking for one of the best Spring Holiday destinations I can assure you that Sydney is an amazing destination well worth visiting.

Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary, Sikkim, India

Written by Jaishree Khamesra from Manish Jaishree. Follow Manish Jaishree on Facebook here.

Spring brings a riot of colors in the jungles across India. Sikkim, a Himalayan state, has some 30 varieties of wild Rhododendrons which bloom from March to May and cover the entire hillsides in pink-red.

The wild Rhododendrons in Sikkim range from alpine matted plants to giant trees, blossoming with white, pink, purple to red flowers in varying tinges. Although these can be seen across Sikkim in spring, the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary in West Sikkim is the loveliest place to watch it.

This sanctuary is along the Singalila ridge and gives excellent views of the Kanchenjunga range of the Himalayas. It is a bio-diversity hot spot too.

The dense forest of Barsey is covered with hemlocks, bamboos, silver firs, magnolia and rhododendron trees, and bushes. Lichens, moss, and orchids further enrich the already rich woods. It is also very rich in birdlife with almost 300 species of birds.

A walk in this sanctuary entices the visitor with the glowing snowy peaks, splashes of colors of rhododendron blooms, and spring-songs from a very rich birdlife, bringing a ‘spring fever’ in the visitor’s heart and putting this sanctuary on the pedestal as the loveliest place to experience Rhododendron filled Spring.

Hilley village is the best accessible entry point to this sanctuary and one can do either a short day-trek from Hilley to Barsey or go for a three or four days hike to Phokteydara and then onto Uttarey.

The Hilley-Barsey trek is a four km bridle path, easy for every age group, and takes about four hours to and fro. One can also stay at Barsey overnight in camps or lodges.

Namibia

Spring is a wonderful time to visit Namibia. It coincides with the dry season, which is the best time for wildlife viewing. Since water sources become scarce, in the dry season, animals congregate around watering holes which make them easier to spot.

Etosha National Park is Namibia’s most famous wildlife park. It is home to an abundance of animals and is often ranked as one of the best safari destinations in the world. In total over 100 types of mammals and nearly 350 species of birds can be found within the park.

For other wildlife sightings head to the Grootberg area. The black rhino tracking experience in Grootberg is run in collaboration with the Khoadi //Hoas Conservancy, which has been held up as a prime example of sustainable tourism operations in Namibia.

Besides wildlife, Namibia is known for its otherworldly landscapes. It is home to some of the tallest sand dunes in the world, iconic landscapes like Deadvlei and Sossusvlei, and desolate desert stretches like the Skeleton Coast. However, in the summer months, temperatures can be oppressive. So, the spring offers slightly cooler temperatures to explore the outdoors.
