Le Pain Quotidien

Le Pain Quotidien – baked eggs

There are many cool restaurants in London. However, this organic-range café is my go-to place in London for breakfast or brunch. With three stores in London to choose from, you won’t be disappointed with a visit to this eatery.

My favorite location is the one in Southbank. With the option to eat both indoors and outside, weather depending, I’ve taken both my family and sisters to Le Pain Quotidien on separate occasions.

Not only is this café fully organic, but they cater to vegans too. Their breakfast menu has plenty of choices, even for toddlers, and I can highly recommend one of their baked eggs dishes.

They are truly divine. The range of bread available is the largest I’ve seen and be warned; the Baker’s Basket of bread has a huge choice. You’ll be hard-pressed to finish it along with the main dish as well. While Le Pain Quotidien is amazing for brunch, you also have the option of having lunch or dinner there. Their tea, coffee, beers, and wine are all certified organic too.

And what about trying your hand at making artisan bread too. Le Pain Quotidien holds baking classes on Friday evenings, about once a month. These are the perfect way to get hands-on experience in making bread, even gluten-free options.

With an ever-changing menu to match the season and so much choice, you must include a visit to Le Pain Quotidien if you are visiting London, particularly the Southbank area.

Harrods London

Harrods - London
Harrods – London

While in London there is so much to see and do, so why not knock out three things all at once.  Eat, Drink and Shop.  My three favorite things to do, not necessarily in that order.  Where do I go to be able to do it all- Harrods of course!  One of the most exciting shopping establishments in the world is Harrods, which makes it a must-do for a London itinerary.

You will find Harrods in the distinguished Knightsbridge area of London which is a perfect location.  At almost a million square feet and seven floors tall, there is something for everyone! I favor what I call the three B’s:  Browsing, begging (my husband) and buying are three things that seem to happen to me each time I go.  For my husband, it is more about the food to try.  I wish I had a picture of his face when he bought truffles and the truffle cutting board.

Of course, there is designer merchandise everywhere you turn. However, there is a Harrods brand too. In fact, a whole area of Harrods items at reasonable prices.  So, souvenir shop while you are there. Don’t forget to sample the wine, the chocolates, and all the pasties too!

Dishoom Covent Garden

One of London’s biggest draws is its many authentic Indian restaurants. There are several good restaurants in London. However, outside of India, it is probably the best place to get an Indian curry in the world.

Although it is difficult to just choose a single place to recommend in the city, Dishoom comes recommended by many. Reminiscent of the traditional Irani cafes in Mumbai, Dishoom serves elevated Indian cuisine.

It is certainly not the cheapest restaurant in London, but it is priced reasonably for the quality of the food that lands on your plate. They are open throughout the day, which means you can even get breakfast at Dishoom. It is difficult to just recommend a single dish, but their biryani is wonderfully aromatic, and their cocktails are smashing.

Today, Dishoom has five outlets in London, but one of the best is certainly their Covent Garden location, in the heart of the West End. It’s the perfect place to grab dinner or drinks if you are catching a play in London’s Theatreland. Address: Dishoom Covent Garden; 12 Upper St. Martin’s Lane, London WC2H 9FB

Fortnum and Mason

Fortnum and Mason London

Fortnum and Mason, London England is a most wonderful location to spoil yourself with High Tea. Here are my three tips!

Tip 1: Dress up, it’s fun and adds to feeling special. Luckily, I had that little black dress!

Tip 2: Arrive early and explore each of the four levels of Fortnum and Mason. It is at the entrance that I realize we are somewhere special; beautiful marble, a magnificent chandelier, two statues, and a doorman to welcome you. We wander the ground floor with decorated tins and jars of any type of food you can imagine; all displayed with precision.

Taking the spiral staircase downstairs there is fresh food from Spain, Italy and other countries around the world; beautifully displayed. Fortnum and Mason is famous for providing food to the Royal Family. Third floor for high-quality clothing.

Tip 3: There is so much delicious food you won’t leave hungry. And that’s the reason for our visit: High Tea! The decor is regal with its beautiful white tablecloths, teapots, and delicate cups and saucers. We begin with a glass of champagne and Fortnum and Mason tea.

The food is delicious with two, three-tiered plates with sandwiches on the bottom tier, scones of the second, and cakes on top. We ordered a Savoury and High Tea (sweet). Fortnum and Mason 181 Piccadilly Street, London England.

The Shard

Aqua Shard – Afternoon Tea

London is famous for its historic sights, but you should also make time to take in the city’s modern architecture. Soaring 95 stories over the south bank of the Thames, The Shard is one of the icons of London’s skyline. Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, the Shard was completed in 2012. The tallest building in the UK, it is named for its likeness to a shard of glass jutting into the sky.

As you can imagine, the sights from the upper floors of this building are quite spectacular. Visit The View from The Shard viewing decks for 360-degree views of the city and a birds-eye view of the Tower of London.

Afterward, we recommend afternoon tea at Aqua Shard, one of several restaurants in the building. There are several nice places to eat in London. However, the mix of modern buildings and the traditional English experience of afternoon tea will be a highlight of your trip to London.

American Bar in London

American Bar – London

Any cocktail aficionado worth their lost shaker of salt should make a pilgrimage to American Bar in London.

This iconic and highly acclaimed bar, located in The Savoy hotel, is currently ranked the #1 bar in the world (according to World’s 50 Best Bars). Making it one of the most famous restaurants in London.

Bartender Harry Craddock published the legendary Savoy Cocktail Book here in 1930 – commonly called the “bartender’s bible” – but the cocktails still continue to push the envelope. Historical significance abounds here, but American Bar isn’t afraid to change up its menu and continue growing creatively.

Previous iterations of their drink list have featured the popular “Abbey Road,” containing Star of Bombay gin, Martini Rubino, lemon juice, yuzu juice, Champagne syrup, and citrus dust. Fan of brown spirits?

The “Black Eagle” cocktail was delicious; it contained a mixture of Dewar’s 12-year old Whisky, Barolo Chianti, Campari, Savoy grenadine, cold brew coffee, and tonic. Really, you can’t go wrong with anything here; with their diverse array of cocktails, American Bar has something for everyone’s palette!

Restaurant Inamo

Inamo Restaurant London

Inamo was one of those places we ended up by chance and ended up loving it! After a cold winter day exploring the city, a friend and I were starving and decided to stop by for some Japanese food.

Luckily, we arrived early, so we got a table without booking it in advance. To our surprise, what was supposed to be a simple Asian dinner ended up being much more!

At the restaurant, there are interactive projections on each table that allows you to change a virtual tablecloth, order your meal and see the food you chose projected there, so you get a feel of the dish even before ordering. The projections also allow you to play games, get information about the neighborhood and even see the kitchen.

This was one of the unexpectedly fun restaurants in London. Since you order virtually, the waiters exist only to bring the food and drinks. The food was decent, and although not super cheap, we loved the experience. It was one of those places that definitely surprise you while traveling, which provides you with a feeling of being somewhere different and doing something new.

There are 3 locations in London: Soho (the one we went to), Covent Garden, and Camden Town. It is possible to book a table online, which is advisable. A good option if you’re interested in technology and a new way of eating.

A Food Tour Around Borough Market

Borough_Market_Sandwich
Borough Market Sandwich

I love learning about local food and drink wherever I travel, and although I am English, I was still intrigued to see what a food tour in London would be like.  How would the tour showcase British food and drink to visitors?

Very well in fact.  I took a food tour around Borough Market and the surrounding area with Secret Food Tours and was pleasantly surprised by the variety and quality of the dishes we tried.

Borough Market is a gem and one of the great places to eat in London. We kicked off the tour with an egg and bacon sandwich, which is always the best way to start the day!

We continued with fish and chips, another British institution, but not before we had explored the market for ourselves and sampled some of the delicious food the market stalls sell there every day.  A sausage roll, English cheese, doughnuts, and a sticky toffee pudding rounded off the food tastings, but we also enjoyed a drink or two as well!

Honey mead, English cider, beer, and good old English tea helped to wash down all the wonderful food.  Throughout the tour, our guide shared her knowledge about British food and drink and was great company on our culinary journey through London.  If you’d like to get a real taste of British food and drink, don’t miss a food tour and learn where to eat in London!

Neal’s Yard

Neals_Yard_London_England
Neals Yard – London England

Neal’s Yard can be found tucked away in the very heart of Covent Garden, an area of London best known for its many theatres, cafés, and of course, the world-famous Apple Market.

Elsewhere in Covent Garden, in the middle of the Seven Dials part of the district, Neal’s Yard has been wowing locals and tourists alike with its secret location and colorful murals since the 1970s.

For those who are fans of all things beauty, you’ll likely have heard of Neal’s Yard Remedies, an organic beauty and health company founded in the area in 1981. Today, the brand’s flagship store can be found at 15 Neal’s Yard.

And, if you want to see Neal’s Yard for yourself, then the pretty little courtyard is best visited in the early morning mid-week before all the tourists arrive.  It’s also worth noting that the yard is home to several eateries and bars, including the vegan Wild Food Café, and Homeslice Neal’s Yard. It is not one of the posh restaurants in London and you need to go there.
